DTCC Launches Securities Tokenization on Canton and Besu

By Orbitrum

DTCC launched its securities tokenization service on Canton Network and a private Besu blockchain on October 28, 2026, giving institutions access to blockchain-based representations of DTC-held securities, although the roughly $30 trillion in eligible assets does not represent securities already tokenized.

What did DTCC make available through Canton Network?

Eligible institutions can convert DTC-custodied stocks, ETFs and U.S. Treasury securities into tokens backed one-for-one by their underlying assets, preserving existing ownership rights while allowing transfers between registered blockchain wallets around the clock.

Orbitrum Investor Impact

Why does the DTCC launch matter for Canton Network?

Canton becomes one of two initial blockchain networks connected to DTCC's regulated tokenization infrastructure, with 20 financial institutions, including JPMorgan, Citi and Morgan Stanley, having signed access agreements. This creates an institutional adoption opportunity, although the agreements do not establish transaction volumes or revenue for Canton.

Does the $30 trillion figure represent assets already tokenized?

No. DTCC identified 34 securities eligible for tokenization at launch, representing approximately $30 trillion in assets held at DTC; neither that figure nor the 20 access agreements establishes how much has actually been tokenized.

Could DTCC's tokenization service benefit Canton Coin (CC)?

Additional activity using Canton's Global Synchronizer could increase demand for Canton Coin because its usage fees are paid in CC and burned. However, DTCC has not disclosed how much service activity will generate CC-denominated fees, so the launch does not establish a measurable benefit for token holders.

Are Stellar and Circle's Arc blockchain included in the launch?

No. Canton Network and DTCC's private Besu network were the initial integrations, while Stellar is expected to support DTC-tokenized assets in the first half of 2027 and Circle's Arc blockchain is also planned for integration in 2027.

What should Canton investors monitor after the launch?

The key evidence of adoption will be actual securities tokenized, transaction activity on Canton and institutional usage as DTCC onboards additional participants, alongside the planned expansion to other blockchain networks in 2027.
